Hello Prue

I've just posted a longer bibliography of resources over on Youth Work Online which might be useful: http://network.youthworkonline.org.uk/profiles/blogs/studying-youth-work-and-social

During the Youth Work & Social Networking Project we also bookmarked lots of resources under the 'YWSN' tag here: http://delicious.com/tag/ywsn

Not explicitly focussed on political engagement - but hopefully some useful resources there.

On young people, digital and politics specifically you might like to take a look at this recent report: http://www.citizenshipfoundation.org.uk/main/news.php?n765

Will see if I can think of anything else.

If you publish your essay or any articles off the back of it online, please do let me know as I'd love to read it.

Hi,
I am currently doing a project on whether social networking sites have increased youth participation in the political process, i am just starting and it is the first time i have done anything like this. It is for my Extended project, an A level qualifaction.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend more studies, as i am doing a meta-analysis.
I would also be very interested in any information on the inia study, as most of the info is aobut the US. any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks Prue Seaward

Hi Tim!

Yes your interpretation is correct. I have used a recently developed scale that measures parallel online and offline social capital measures. I am yet to defend my thesis, after which I will definitely post it online. Just for your information... my sample size is 950 and limited to Chennai - a metro in Tamil Nadu, South India. I have not researched specific Internet tools but "Internet" in totality (limitations of being an independent researcher without funding!).

There are many articles that have influenced my study..but I have found a dearth of research that compare across online and offline lives with parallel measures. Apart from the articles mentioned in your blog, the main articles that influenced my thesis were "Virtual Cultivation: Online Worlds, Offline Perceptions" and "The Impact of Time Online: Social Capital and Cyberbalkanization" by Dmitri Williams.

Regards

Hey Kalyani

This sounds really interesting. Will the thesis be available publicly at any point?

I think the social capital perspective on young people's online interactions is one of the most interesting - particularly as a way of exploring new forms of digital inclusion and exclusion and understanding the interface between online and offline networks using a concept that works across both.

Am I understanding from your comment that you essential found (amongst young people in India in any case) that:

>Any loss of social capital resources as a result of being online (and, for example, spending less time in offline activities) was ofset/compensated for by gains in social capital from using online tools?

Would love to hear what the 5 or 10 articles that most influenced your final thesis were...
